Occupational Accidental Coverage |
 |
|
An occupational accidental coverage covers three of the following liabilities: accidental death and dismemberment, accident disability and accident medical. The coverage is not a standard health or medical policy, but rather a cause-and-effect coverage triggered by an accidental injury that occurs in the course of an insured commercial driver work. That would include injuries sustained in an accident while in route to a drop off in slip-and-fall incidents in the course of the driver's duties.
Employers may look for an affordable way to protect themselves and their employees from potential monetary loss resulting from job-related accidents. Your non-employee independent contractors, who may not be eligible for your corporate workers' compensation insurance, is even more in need. Purchasing individual workers' compensation coverage can be expensive or may not be available for these individuals. At the same time, not providing insurance for independent contractors may depart your company exposed to a multitude of liability problems. It is key for your independent contractors and employees to have a inclusive accident program at an affordable cost, and by offering this important, flexible benefit may help you attract and retain workers.
Unlike workers' compensation, which covers employees, occupational accident policies provide coverage for independent contractors. Workers' compensation, paid by the employer, is mandated in most states; occupational accident coverage, which is purchased by the independent contractor through the company, is not.
Commercial carriers that do not provide workers' compensation for their employees or sponsor an occupational accident program for their independent contractors run great risk to incur costly lawsuits brought by these employees or independent contractors in the event of a serious injury. It is more common, for trucking companies to at least provide workers' compensation for employee drivers, clerical warehouse staff and other employees of the company. That leaves out a valuable group for motor carriers: the independent drivers they rely on to extend their capabilities. Providing both workers' compensation for employees and occupational accident for independent contractors offers the greatest protection for everyone.
